I dwell within this world, yet seek no worldly prize; I have walked through the bazaar, but not as one who buys.
I live in this world, but I have no desire for worldly possessions or pleasures. I have passed through the marketplace, but I am not a buyer.
2
I am alive, yet no savor of life remains; though I am in my senses, aware I am not.
I am alive, but the pleasure of living is no longer left; although I am conscious, I am not alert or mindful.
3
I shall pass unstained through this abode of existence; I am merely a passing shadow, not a carving etched upon the wall.
I will pass through this world of existence completely untainted and unattached. I am merely a fleeting shadow, not a permanent impression carved onto a wall.
4
Chastened by life's sobering truths, no remedy do I require; this frailty is born of sorrow, I am not truly ill.
I am dejected by sobering lessons and have no need for medicine; this weakness of mine is born of grief, I am not physically sick.
5
I am that rose which autumn has laid waste; no thorn am I to cling to any hem.
I am that flower which autumn has ruined; I am not a thorn that would cling to someone's garment.
6
O Lord, keep me safe from the cruelty of that idol; I am no seeker of her favor and grace.
O God, keep me protected from the cruelty of that beloved; I do not even desire their favor or kindness.
7
Though in the court of God I make no claim to piety, yet I am not such a sinner that idols would rejoice in me.
Although I make no claim to piety in the court of God, I am not such a great sinner that idols would be pleased with me.
8
My melancholy and frailty know no bounds, Akbar; even before an infidel, I am not a man of faith.
Akbar, there is no limit to my sadness and weakness; even when standing opposite an infidel, I am unable to appear as a true believer.
