कह दो कोई साक़ी से कि हम मरते हैं प्यासे

Altaf Hussain Hali· Ghazal· 9 shers

This ghazal poignantly captures the profound anguish of longing and the beloved's cold indifference. Driven to the brink of despair, the lover would even accept poison if denied wine, expressing that all sorrow stems purely from the beloved's neglect rather than any intermediaries.

Let someone tell the cupbearer that we are dying of thirst; if wine is denied, let him pour a cup of poison—so be it!
Let someone tell the cupbearer that we are dying of thirst; if he cannot give wine, let him give a cup of poison instead—it does not matter.

Whatever grievance exists is of her neglect alone; neither have I a dispute with the messenger, nor a quarrel with the breeze.
Whatever grievance there is, it is solely regarding the beloved's indifference; I have neither any dispute with the messenger nor any quarrel with the morning breeze.

We gave up on medicine relying on prayer, and now our only prayer to God is that we no longer even need to pray.
