I rue that in this garden grove I built my nest among; for I found here no companion, nor one who shared my tongue.
I regret building my nest in this garden, for I found neither a companion nor anyone who speaks my language here.

Display your reckless speed, O galloping steed of fleeting life; keep me riding stirrup to stirrup and rein to rein with the crescent-flash of lightning.
O swift steed of passing life, keep showing me your speed, and keep me riding right alongside the flash of lightning.

My utter frailty has made me the Solomon of this age: a gentle wave of the garden breeze sweeps me up and carries me away.
My extreme physical weakness has made me the Solomon of this age, as even a gentle wave of the garden breeze lifts me up and carries me away.

Since the dawn of pre-eternity, I have been numbered among your singers; the nightingale of Heaven's farthest lote-tree taught me the art of lament.
Since the dawn of eternity, I have been among those who sing your praises; the nightingale of Sidra (Gabriel) taught me the art of lamentation.

Who knows when, as I spoke, they fell asleep and when they awoke; / And so, from the very start, I had to tell my tale once more.
I do not know when during my talk they fell asleep and when they woke up, which is why I had to recount my entire story all over again from the beginning.

Far from the caravan it swept and cast my wasted frame; for like a surging flood to me, the caravan's bell became.
The sound of the caravan's bell became like a surging floodwave to me, sweeping my frail body far away from the caravan.

Even turned to dust, this heart’s unrest will never fade away / So whispers the drifting sand to me from the water's edge.
The restlessness of the heart will not disappear even after turning to dust; the drifting sand on the seashore tells me this.
8
The desert where for your sake I wandered, raising dust— / Even the sky met me exhausted along those weary stages.
In the desert where I wandered raising dust for your sake, I found even the sky tired and exhausted at those stages.
9
I am that moth consumed by the mere thought of the candle's flame; a blaze flared in my heart the moment I caught sight of smoke.
I am that moth which is burned merely by the thought of the candle; the moment I saw smoke, a fire erupted in my heart.
10
How could I ever reach the realm where it has made its way? The heart broke free beyond itself, after locking me in chains.
The heart lost all self-control and broke free after putting chains on me; how can I possibly reach the realm where it has now arrived?

From the dust of the road, O Nazm, this plaintive voice calls out: / Where have you gone, O departed life? Where have you cast me about?
O Nazm, a cry rises from the dust of the road asking: O past life, where have you vanished, and where have you cast me away?
