1. हंगामा है क्यूँ बरपा थोड़ी सी जो पी ली है डाका तो नहीं मारा चोरी तो नहीं की है

   अर्थ: Why is such an uproar raised if I have sipped a little wine? I haven't committed robbery, nor stolen what wasn't mine.

2. ऐ शौक़ वही मय पी ऐ होश ज़रा सो जा मेहमान-ए-नज़र इस दम एक बर्क़-ए-तजल्ली है

   अर्थ: Drink that very wine, O longing, and let reason sleep a while; for the guest of my sight this moment is a lightning flash of divine radiance.

3. तालीम का शोर ऐसा तहज़ीब का ग़ुल इतना बरकत जो नहीं होती निय्यत की ख़राबी है

   अर्थ: Such loud clamor for learning, such din of cultured grace; if no blessings ever flourish, 'tis foul intent at the base.

4. सच कहते हैं शैख़ 'अकबर' है ताअत-ए-हक़ लाज़िम हाँ तर्क-ए-मय-ओ-शाहिद ये उन की बुज़ुर्गी है

   अर्थ: The Sheikh speaks truly, O Akbar: submission to the Divine is indeed a duty; / Yet to renounce both wine and the beloved—that is a venerable greatness of his own.
