जब सनम कूँ ख़याल-ए-बाग़ हुआ
This ghazal describes the beloved's desire to stroll through the garden in search of leisure. Upon seeing a devoted throng of lovers on all sides, the delicate beloved swells with charm and proud disdain.

जब सनम कूँ ख़याल-ए-बाग़ हुआ
तालिब-ए-नश्शा-ए-फ़राग़ हुआ
When the beloved longed for the garden's grace, they sought the intoxicating ease of sweet respite.
When the beloved thought of visiting the garden, they became a seeker of the intoxication and pleasure of leisure.

फ़ौज-ए-उश्शाक़ देख हर जानिब
नाज़नीं साहिब-ए-दिमाग़ हुआ
Beholding an army of lovers on every side, the delicate beauty turned haughty with pride.
Seeing an army of lovers on every side, the delicate beloved became proud and arrogant.

रश्क सूँ तुझ लबाँ की सुर्ख़ी पर
जिगर-ए-लाला दाग़-दाग़ हुआ
Envious of the deep crimson of your lips, the heart of the tulip was scarred through and through.
Out of envy for the redness of your lips, the heart of the tulip flower became completely scarred.

दिल-ए-उश्शाक़ क्यूँ न हो रौशन
जब ख़याल-ए-सनम चराग़ हुआ
Why would the lover's heart not be illumined bright, when the very thought of the beloved has turned into a lamp of light?
Why wouldn't the lover's heart be illuminated when the thought of the beloved has itself turned into a lamp?

ऐ 'वली' गुल-बदन कूँ बाग़ में देख
दिल-ए-सद-चाक बाग़-बाग़ हुआ
O Vali, on beholding that rose-bodied beloved in the garden, my hundred-torn heart blossomed into a garden of delight.
O Wali, seeing the flower-bodied beloved in the garden, my hundred-torn heart blossomed with joy.
