With such strange ecstasy ahead of the executioner we tread, that two paces ahead of feet and shadow races our head.
We walked ahead of the executioner with such strange joy that our head moved two paces ahead of our feet and shadow.

Fate had intended to write me ruined by the wine of love, / But wrote only 'ruined'—the pen could go no further.
Fate had intended to write me as ruined by the wine of love, but it only wrote the word 'ruined' and the pen could move no further.

The sorrows of the world have purged the drunken bliss of love; / Else we too once were wont to taste the ecstasy of grief.
Worldly sorrows have wiped away the joyful intoxication of love; otherwise, we too used to savor the sweet pleasure of love's grief earlier.

For God's sake, grant praise to this frenzy of my desire: / That at her threshold, I arrive ahead of my own messenger.
For God's sake, praise this madness of my longing, that I arrive at the beloved's doorstep even before my own messenger.

All the distress and disarray we suffered all our life has laid itself before your coiling, tangled tresses.
O tangled and twisted locks of hair, all the troubles and distress we have endured throughout our life have now presented themselves before you.
6
That wave of blood fluttering its wings within the heart and soul—in our proud illusion, we once mistook it for the breath of life.
The surge of blood that flutters its wings within our heart and liver is something we once, in our proud delusion, mistook for the breath of life.

Now they swear an oath to attend my funeral, O Ghalib / Those who once would always swear upon my very life.
O Ghalib, those who once used to swear oaths upon my life are now taking an oath that they will attend my funeral.
