क्या कहें किस से प्यार कर बैठे
अपने दिल को फ़िगार कर बैठे
Whom have we loved, alas, what can we say? We have only ended up wounding our own heart.

सब्र की इक क़बा जो बाक़ी थी
उस को भी तार तार कर बैठे
The solitary robe of patience that still remained / Even that, we ended up tearing thread by thread.
The single garment of patience that was still left with us, we ended up tearing even that to shreds.

आज फिर उन की आमद आमद है
हम ख़िज़ाँ को बहार कर बैठे
Today once more their arrival is near; we have turned autumn itself into spring.
Today their arrival is expected once again, and we have turned autumn into spring.

वाए उस बुत का वा'दा-ए-फ़र्दा
उम्र भर इंतिज़ार कर बैठे
Alas, that idol's promise of tomorrow—we ended up waiting our whole life through.
Alas, on that beloved's promise of tomorrow, we ended up spending our entire life just waiting.

ख़ुद जो ग़म हैं तो आइना हैराँ
किस ग़ज़ब का सिंघार कर बैठे
When grief itself is what they wear, the mirror stands amazed; in what dreadful, wondrous beauty have they adorned themselves!
When they themselves are the very embodiment of grief, even the mirror is astonished at the extraordinary and intense adornment they have put on.

हम तही-दस्त तुझ को क्या देते
जान तुझ पर निसार कर बैठे
Empty-handed as we were, what could we have offered you? / In the end, we went and sacrificed our very life for you.
Being empty-handed, what else could we have given you? Thus, we ended up sacrificing our very life for you.
