Ghazal
This ghazal captures the power of sincere passion and the hopeful anticipation of the beloved's arrival. Acknowledging that expressing love often invites public disgrace, the poet nonetheless embraces this vulnerability, compelled by the heart's helpless devotion.

The passion of my heart has shown its sway at last; from the direction of the door comes the faint chime of anklet bells.
The passion of my heart has finally shown its effect, for some sound of anklet bells has indeed come from the direction of the door.

Though confessing love brings disgrace, it is true / Yet what can I do, now that my heart is set on you?
Although expressing love certainly brings disgrace, what can I do now that my heart has fallen for you?

I swear upon your life, there is no one here save me; come in without hesitation, there is solitude in this room at least.
I swear upon your life that there is no one here except me. Please come in without any hesitation, as there is at least solitude in the room.

When I said, 'My heart writhes in agony now', smiling, she replied, 'It must writhe—it is mad, after all.'
When I said that my heart is writhing in great agony now, my beloved laughed and said that it must writhe, since it is crazy after all.
5
Let us see when it departs for the realm of non-existence; weary of this house of flesh, my soul has grown restless indeed.
Let us see when the soul departs toward the realm of non-existence (death), for it has indeed grown restless and troubled inside this house of the body.
6
My heart thumps fast—shall I steal a kiss upon her cheek or dare I not? In slumber, she has indeed slipped the quilt from her face.
My heart is pounding as I wonder whether to kiss her cheek or not; after all, she has moved the quilt away from her face in her sleep.
7
Let us see if the memory of that rose-like cheek now reaches my lips; / By strolling through the garden, at least I have diverted my heart.
Let us see if the memory of the rose-cheeked beloved still reaches the lips; we have at least tried to divert our heart by taking a stroll in the garden.

Why should I court calamity, playing the madman at her side? Let wild frenzy seize the heart—the wretched thing is already mad inside.
Why should I trap myself in trouble by acting mad with them? If the heart experiences wild frenzy, so be it; the wretched thing is already mad anyway.
9
You ground my heart to dust with the brilliance of your stride; and why shouldn't it be so, O youth, for such graceful elegance is your pride.
You reduced my heart to dust with the dazzling beauty of your stride. And why shouldn't it be so, O youth, when your graceful elegance possesses such splendid charm.
10
Though out of polite regard I hold my silence before you, yet the tidings of yesterday's revels have reached me all the same.
Although we stay silent before you out of polite regard, we have indeed received the news of yesterday's gatherings.
11
Bestow upon me a goblet of rose-tinted wine; O cupbearer, why the delay, now that dark clouds have gathered?
Bestow upon me a goblet of rose-coloured wine; O cupbearer, why is there any delay now that dark clouds have gathered?
12
The one whose love you boasted of so proudly yesterday, O Akbar; We went and saw for ourselves today—inconstant they truly are.
O Akbar, the person whose love you were boasting about so proudly yesterday, we went and saw them today and they truly turned out to be unfaithful.
