No thought of the destination have I, nor sense of the path ahead; I simply wander wherever my wandering heart is led.
I have neither any concern for the destination nor any awareness of the path leading to it; I am simply going wherever my heart is leading me.
2
Now grant me too a tongue capable of offering thanks, if in place of a heart You have bestowed only pain.
If You have bestowed pain upon me instead of a heart, then now grant me a tongue capable of expressing gratitude as well.
3
So fiercely did my writhing heart torment me in the gathering crowd, / That those who called my beloved a killer turned to call me the killer aloud.
In the middle of the gathering, my writhing heart tormented me so severely that the people who used to call my beloved a killer began calling me the killer instead.
4
Where should I turn now, tell me, O consummate passion? From every direction today, echoes the voice of my heart.
Tell me, O consummate passion, where should I go now, for today I hear the call of my heart coming from every direction.
5
Let the destination step forward and halt me if it can, for today from every direction echoes the calling of my heart.
If the destination can stop me, let it step forward and do so, because today I hear the call of my heart coming from every direction.
6
I gave up my life so that till Judgment Day it is only I and my solitudes; congratulations indeed to me on this endless leisure to gaze upon my slayer.
I gave up my life so that until the Day of Judgment there would only be me and my solitude; congratulations to me on having the leisure to gaze upon my killer.
7
At every fleeting gesture, my neck still bows in surrender / Even as I clearly know my heart is deceiving me.
Even though I clearly know that my heart is deceiving me, my head still bows in complete surrender at its every gesture.
8
Begone, O counselor! What talk of profit, what of loss? Love has revealed to me the true harvest of love.
Go away, O advisor! What talk of profit and loss is this? Love itself has taught me what the true outcome of love is.
9
From eternity's dawn to Judgment's morn, ablaze I remained bright; Beauty had deemed me merely a candle snuffed out in the gathering of the night.
I remained illuminated from the dawn of eternity until the morning of the Day of Judgment, even though beauty had mistaken me for an extinguished lamp of the gathering.
10
The heart's blood froze in every vein, arrested by this dread: / Lest, stepping forward, my murderer clasp me to their chest instead.
My heart's blood froze in every vein out of fear and apprehension that my killer might step forward and embrace me to his chest.
11
What of a drop, what of a river, whose tempest, whose rising wave? / If You so will, even the dry shore can drown me.
What significance does a drop, a river, a storm, or a wave hold? If You will it, even the dryness of the shore can drown me.
12
Burn me to ashes, O pride of love's consuming flame! For those eyes have now begun to deem me worthy of pity.
O pride of love's burning passion, burn me to ashes, for now those beloved eyes have started to look upon me with pity.
13
Breaking the foot of quest, I sit still upon the path of longing; now let me see the restless passion of the destination itself.
I have broken the foot of my quest and sat down on the path of desire; now I want to see how eagerly the destination itself comes toward me.
14
O crowd of despair, live long and rejoice! You have made me estranged and oblivious to all.
O crowd of despair, live long and be happy, for you have alienated me from everyone and made me oblivious to all.
15
Let it be the pain of deprivation, let it be the sting of defeat; at least, in some measure, they deemed me worthy of something.
Even if I received the pain of deprivation and the feeling of failure, at least they considered me worthy of something in any case.
16
What a strange sight is this: my steps neither advance nor stall; from afar, I gaze at the destination, and the destination gazes back at me.
What a strange scene this is that my steps neither move forward nor come to a stop; from afar, I am gazing at the destination and the destination is gazing back at me.
