When the wild surges of madness were stifled, hidden within the heart / They rose aloft as billows of smoke, and crashed down as bolts of lightning.
When the passions of madness were suppressed and hidden within the heart, they rose like smoke and fell down like lightning.

Beyond the bounds of space, our means of peace have surged far ahead; while the heavens lag behind, reduced to mere dust from our caravan.
Our provisions of peace and comfort have advanced far beyond the bounds of space, while the sky is left trailing behind as the mere dust of our caravan.
3
May such a wind of fortune blow someday, O sky, / That gathering clouds descend as sails upon the boat of wine.
O sky, may such a favorable wind of desire blow someday that the rain clouds descend upon the boat of wine to become its sails.
4
Who knows which soul died in the wilderness without receiving a handful of earth; Whirlwinds drift away, caravan upon caravan.
Who knows which unfortunate soul died in the desert and was denied a proper burial, as whirlwinds keep drifting past like caravan upon caravan.
5
Through sheer excess of self-restraint, the heart's unrest can surge no more; rising no further than the throat, my wails dissolve in stifled sobs.
Due to excessive self-restraint, the heart's restlessness cannot increase any further; my wails rise only up to the throat and turn into stifled hiccups.
6
So choking now is this upheaval in the world's altered state, / That songs burst from the nightingales' beaks turned into wails of pain.
The change in the world's condition has become so suffocating that even the melodies emerging from the nightingales' beaks turn into cries of lamentation.
7
If, despairing of the clouds, the peasant ever waters the soil himself, the very ripples of water turn to lightning and burn his field to ash.
If the farmer, losing hope in the clouds, ever waters the field himself, the very ripples of water turn into lightning and burn down his crop.
8
In this world, all means to cheer the heart have turned to lifeless clay; / A place of peace grew impossible to find, having passed beyond all space away.
In this world, all the means of cheering the heart have turned into corpses, and any place of comfort has become impossible to find, having vanished beyond physical space.
9
In this house of mourning, let none laugh save the lightning, even if the entire field should turn into a bed of saffron.
In this house of mourning, no one should laugh except the lightning, even if the entire field turns into a bed of saffron.
10
In grief over my lost nest, so many straws did I collect / That turning into a nest at last, they brought my heart solace and rest.
In grief over my nest, I collected so many straws that they eventually formed a nest and became a source of comfort for me.
11
How bitterly the gathered clouds wept over Farhad's unfulfilled desire; flowing down from the mountains, streams reached all the way to the garden.
The gathered clouds wept so bitterly over Farhad's unfulfilled longing that streams flowed down from the mountains and reached all the way to the garden.
12
The enamored heart attained the exalted pinnacle of ascension in love; here, the cruelties of idols have often crashed down like the heavens.
The enamored heart attained the exalted status of ascension in love, where the tyrannies of beloveds have often crashed down upon it like the heavens.
13
That single word of longing which had fled my heart in fear, / Turned to an endless tale upon my tongue once she drew near.
The single word of love that had emerged from my heart with great hesitation turned into an entire story on my tongue in front of the beloved.
14
In every affirmation, facets of denial appear; turned to deceit, your words leave me bewildered here.
Aspects of denial have emerged in your every affirmation; turning into deceit, your words leave me utterly bewildered.
15
Such is their delicate grace, even plucking a bloom makes them sway with strain; God knows how they became a wrestler to break this heart of mine in twain.
Their delicacy is such that they strain and sway even while plucking a flower, yet it is a mystery how they became like a wrestler to break my heart.
16
Laughing at the pheasant and partridge's grace, they rise only to falter and sway; their trailing hems turn into a heavy burden, bringing them low in dismay.
They stood up mocking the graceful gait of the pheasant and partridge, yet they stumble themselves; their own long trouser hems become a heavy burden and humiliate them.
17
The restraint of grief has so throttled my throat that it is hard for the sound of a broken heart to escape my lips as a cry of lament.
The restraint of grief has choked my throat so severely that it is difficult for the sound of my broken heart to even escape my mouth as a cry of lament.
18
The seeker's wandering thought at last found the dwelling of the heart,
When from the spaceless realm You turned, descending sky through sky.
The seeker's mind found the destination of the heart only when You returned from the spaceless realm, descending through sky after sky.
19
Behold, the world grows heavy once again with joy and sorrow, though grief and pleasure were born as twins only moments ago.
Look, the world has once again become pregnant with joy and sorrow, even though grief and pleasure were born as twins just a moment ago.

If ever a hidden yearning emerges, this too shall surely depart; having lain concealed so long, your arrow has turned into a longing within my heart.
Your arrow has remained concealed in my heart for so long that it has turned into a longing. If ever any desire departs from my heart, this arrow will emerge along with it.
21
You shall descend from the terrace, O sun of radiant beauty; / And the wall's shadow will fall upon me, turning into the sky.
O sun of beauty, when you descend from the terrace, the shadow of the wall will fall upon us as vast and heavy as the sky.
