Could we but find deliverance from grief, and gain some peace; when the heart is bathed in blood, only then in the Ganga do we bathe.
May we find deliverance from sorrow and gain peace; only when the heart is bathed in blood will we bathe in the holy Ganga.
2
Whether to paradise we go or into hell descend, / If only somewhere, anywhere, we find you in the end.
Whether we end up in heaven or in hell does not matter, as long as we are able to find you somewhere or the other.
3
Within the hollow vault of sky, no taste of joy remains; my heart longs once again to bear your cruelties and pains.
There is not the slightest pleasure left in the vast expanse of the sky; my heart now yearns to endure your cruelties once again.
4
Lest that merciless one forget upon the Day of Reckoning, we keep recording all our transgressions while in this world.
We fear that the merciless one might forget on the Day of Judgment, so we keep writing down our own mistakes while still in this world.
5
It is quite possible that, true to their word, they might arrive; / The trouble is whether I shall be in my senses at that hour.
It is quite possible that the beloved keeps their promise and arrives, but the real difficulty is whether I will be in my senses at that moment.
6
Should God turn displeased, prayer can win His grace; but if the beloved takes offense, how then shall we plead our case?
If God is displeased, He can be appeased through worship, but if the beloved gets upset, how are we supposed to win them over?
7
Severing the heads of friends, they place them right in view, then turn to strangers to ask, 'Upon whose life shall we swear our oath?'
They sever the heads of their friends and place them right in front, and then ask strangers whose oath they should swear.
8
How fond your nature is of flattery and praise; for God's sake, how long must we our entreaties raise?
Your nature is so fond of flattery; for God's sake, for how long should we keep pleading with you?
9
Vain is your greed for my heart in this final hour; this is no treasure of a kind that I would leave behind.
In my final moments, your desire for my heart is futile; this is not the kind of wealth that I would leave behind.
10
Leaving you in the care of God, unfulfilled I depart; recite a prayer for my soul, if ever I cross your heart.
I entrust you to God and depart with my unfulfilled desires; if you ever happen to remember me, recite a prayer for the peace of my soul.
11
From the burning fire within, my tears have turned to sparks; why then should we not set our cold sighs ablaze?
Due to the inner burning of my heart, my tears have turned into sparks of fire; why then should we not ignite our cold sighs with them?
12
If you do not take this life, it will depart of its own accord / How long can we keep praying for the welfare of that faithless one?
If you do not take this life, it will end on its own anyway; how long can we continue to pray for the well-being of that faithless beloved?
13
My neighbors were kept awake all night by my laments; how, then, are we to awaken our sleeping destiny?
Our cries and laments kept the neighbors awake all night, but how are we to awaken our sleeping destiny?
14
That mirror of beauty reveals its radiant grace; overcome with shame, how can I show my face?
That mirror of beauty is displaying their radiant splendor, while I am overcome with such shame that I do not know how to show my face.
15
Heed my words, inflict no cruelty after your fidelity, lest it so happen that we turn our prayers into curses.
Listen to my advice and do not commit cruelty after loyalty, lest we reverse our blessings and begin to curse you instead.
16
We mingle with the enemy only for our friend's sake; what is gained if we end up turning that friend into a foe?
We interact with the enemy only for the sake of our friend; what is the point if we end up turning our own friend into an enemy?
17
Know this well: you are not one to be ever forgotten; / O Dagh, how could we ever banish you from our heart?
Remember this well that you are not something to be forgotten. O Dagh, how could we ever remove you from our heart?
