Ghazal
This ghazal contemplates the fleeting, relentless passage of life and the transience of human existence. It poignantly explores the contrast between the external mirth of the world and the deep, silent grief of a wounded heart concealed behind smiles.

In what a breathless rush did life's caravan pass by, that I saw tomorrow veiled in the rising dust of yesterday.
Life's caravan passed by in such a breathless rush that I saw tomorrow obscured in the rising dust of yesterday.
2
In what rapturous trance were the tulip and rose engrossed, that amid mere laughter, the stitches of the wounded heart tore open.
The tulip and rose were engrossed in such an intoxicated state of self-forgetfulness that, in mere laughter, the stitches of the wounded heart ripped open.
3
O companions of the gathering of joy, where shall I search for you? Beneath the shadow of the stars, or in the fading moonlight of the night's last hour?
O companions of the gathering of joy, where should I search for you—under the shadow of the stars, or in the moonlight of the night's late hours?
4
In every knot of this world a restless struggle lies concealed; just as the wave of a rose's laughter sleeps within each budding flower.
A restless struggle lies hidden within every knot or problem of this world, just as the joyful blooming of a flower is concealed inside every bud.
5
My wounds already possess their own bright gleam, yet cruel is this plight: / With my pale and faded countenance, I must linger in the moonlight.
My wounds already have a glow of their own, and to make matters worse, I dwell in the bright moonlight with a pale and faded face.
6
In what reckoning were we, that anyone would inquire of our plight? / This distinction we attained only in the turmoil of awareness.
We were of no significance that anyone would inquire after our condition; we attained this distinction only in the turmoil of consciousness.
7
As destiny decrees it, so the deed must unfold; what hand has mortal man in the evil of which we're told?
As fate decrees, so the deed is committed by man; what role or agency does man even have then in this so-called evil?
8
To the shadow's pace, the high and low are one and the same; one never stumbles who walks upon the path of humility.
Just as high and low ground are identical to the movement of a shadow, one who walks the path of humility never stumbles.
9
The heavens were seized with ecstasy, the earth fell in a swoon— / Such twofold wonders echoed from that single eternal sound.
That single eternal sound had two kinds of effects: the sky was seized with ecstasy, while the earth fell unconscious.
10
The realization of the dream we dreamed our whole life through, / Perhaps turns out to be no more than one departing breath.
The dream we kept seeing all through our life, perhaps its fulfillment is nothing more than a single final breath.
11
The deluge of mortality swept even the bubble along—granting a life of merely a breath, just to heave a single sigh.
The flood of mortality washed even a bubble into a momentary life lasting just a breath, solely so that it could draw a single sigh.
12
No longer do I fear the terrors of the Judgment Day; a hundred doomsdays I have seen in this brief, two-day stay.
I no longer fear the terrors of the Day of Judgment, for I have already witnessed a hundred doomsdays in this brief, two-day life.
13
With you beside me, O heart, a thousand yearnings arise; what could ever be lacking while your well-being endures?
O heart, when you are right here beside me, why are there still thousands of unfulfilled desires? What is lacking as long as you are safe and well?
14
If they themselves inquire of my state, summoning me to their presence, / Who knows what words might slip from my tongue in the trance of self-oblivion?
If the beloved summons me before them to inquire about my well-being, who knows what words might escape my tongue in a state of self-oblivion.
15
You are but a shadow of existence, whence then this self-adoration? A shadow finds its nurturing only in the lap of self-oblivion.
You are merely a shadow of existence, so why this self-worship? A shadow's true nurturing and existence lie only in the lap of selflessness and ego-loss.
16
A single breath is all that stands between Doomsday and us; a bubble's fragile veil divides tomorrow from yesterday.
Only a single breath stands between us and the Day of Judgment, just as the barrier separating tomorrow from yesterday is as fragile as a bubble.
17
The night of grief has glared at me since the break of day; signs of darkness now appear even in the sun's bright ray.
The night of sorrow has been glaring at me since daytime, and traces of darkness are visible even in the light of day.
18
Though you have cast me away from your doorstep, my shadow still wanders down that very lane.
You have removed me from your doorstep, yet my shadow still wanders in that very same street.
19
The command to bow before You, You have issued only now; yet long ago I had inscribed it in the covenant of servitude.
You have commanded me to prostrate only now, whereas I had already written and pledged my submission long ago in the covenant of servitude.
20
Having teased you, O Nazm, we are filled with regret; who knew, cruel one, that you would weep in mere jest?
O Nazm, we regret teasing you; who knew that you would actually start crying over simple fun?
